Theory of Change

Why This Works.

Most creative entrepreneurs fail not because they lack talent, but because they were never taught to run a business. They have vision without vocabulary β€” passion without process. TOM closes that gap.

Our theory is simple: if you give a talented, coachable founder 12 focused weeks of brand, strategy, and financial literacy support β€” paired with real mentorship and community β€” you change the trajectory of their business and their life.

TOM's impact model is built on the premise that access β€” not talent β€” is the primary barrier for first-generation creative entrepreneurs. Removing that barrier produces measurable, compounding returns across economic, social, and community dimensions.

Input

Talented, coachable founders who are blocked by lack of business knowledge, capital, or access β€” not lack of ability. Selected by Surgical Logic scoring.

Activity

12-week Legacy Builder Cohort delivering brand identity, strategic business planning, financial literacy, 1-on-1 mentorship, and Demo Day preparation.

Output

Founders graduate with a complete brand identity, written business plan, financial literacy foundation, and a live pitch delivered at Demo Day.

Short-Term Outcome

Increased business confidence, clearer brand positioning, improved financial decision-making, and a network of peers and mentors.

Long-Term Impact

Sustainable businesses launched or advanced, generational wealth created, communities strengthened, and a living demonstration that creative talent is a legitimate economic force.

Legacy

Each TOM graduate becomes proof of concept β€” and often, a future mentor, donor, or community leader who brings the next founder through the door.

What We Measure

Six Areas of Measurable Outcome.

TOM tracks impact across six interconnected domains β€” because the transformation a founder undergoes is never just about their business.

Brand & Identity Clear Brand, Clear Direction

Every cohort graduate leaves with a complete, professional brand identity β€” not just a logo, but a full visual system, voice, and positioning strategy they own outright.

100% of graduates receive brand identity deliverables
Target: measurable brand recognition improvement at 6 months
Strategic Planning A Real Business Plan

Founders build a written, actionable strategic business plan during the cohort β€” not a template, a real document that reflects their model, market, and 3-year vision.

100% of graduates complete a written business plan
Target: 75% still using plan actively at 12 months
Financial Literacy Money Fluency

Founders move from financial avoidance to financial confidence β€” understanding pricing, cash flow, taxes, separation of business and personal finances, and basic investment concepts.

Target: 80% score improvement on financial literacy assessment
Target: 70% open business banking within 6 months
Business Launch Founders Who Ship

The ultimate measure β€” founders who launch a new venture, advance an existing one, secure their first paying client, or raise their first funding within 12 months of cohort graduation.

Target: 75% launch or advance within 12 months
Target: 40% generate revenue within 6 months
Community & Network A Network That Lasts

Cohort members build real peer relationships β€” the kind of network that produces referrals, collaborations, accountability, and community support that outlasts the program by years.

Target: 60% maintain active peer relationships at 12 months
Target: 25% become TOM mentors or alumni contributors
Economic Equity Structural Access

TOM's sliding-scale model ensures financial hardship is never the reason a qualified founder is turned away. Every scholarship seat is a direct investment in Arizona's long-term economic equity.

Target: 30% of seats filled by scholarship recipients
$12.50 social return projected per $1 invested

The Stories Behind the Numbers.

Impact lives in people, not spreadsheets. These are illustrative founder stories representing the transformation TOM is designed to produce.

I had been making music for fifteen years but I had no idea how to make it a business. TOM gave me a brand, a plan, and the language to talk about my work like a professional.

Nobody in my family had ever run a business. TOM was the first place that treated me like I belonged in the room. That alone changed what I thought was possible for me.

Financial Transparency

Where Every Dollar Actually Goes.

TOM Enterprise operates on a lean, mission-first model. We do not have a bloated administrative structure. Every dollar that comes into TOM is mapped directly to program delivery, scholar access, or the outreach that brings the next founder through the door.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, TOM is required to file annual Form 990s with the IRS β€” public documents that show exactly how funds are received and spent. We exceed those requirements with this real-time allocation breakdown.

Our commitment: No more than 10% of TOM's total budget will go to administrative and general expenses in any fiscal year. If we ever exceed that threshold, we will publish a public explanation and correction plan within 30 days.

Program Delivery 70%
Direct cohort delivery β€” curriculum, mentorship, brand identity work, financial literacy workshops, materials, and Demo Day production.
Scholarship Fund 15%
Fully or partially subsidized seats for founders who qualify but cannot afford program tuition. $1,000 funds one complete scholarship seat.
Community Outreach & Growth 10%
Youth programs, free public workshops, partner relationship development, and awareness campaigns that expand TOM's reach across Arizona.
Administration & Compliance 5%
Legal, accounting, technology infrastructure, insurance, and nonprofit compliance requirements. We keep this as low as responsible operations allow.

Social Return on Investment

$12.50 Back for Every $1 Invested.

TOM's projected Social Return on Investment (SROI) of $12.50 per $1 is calculated using a conservative model that captures economic value created by graduates β€” including revenue generated, jobs created, tax contributions, and reduced reliance on public support systems.

This figure is a Year 1 projection based on comparable creative incubator and nonprofit accelerator programs. TOM will commission an independent SROI audit following the completion of our first two cohorts.

SROI methodology follows Social Value International standards. Projections are based on comparable programs and will be updated with verified data following first cohort completion. TOM does not claim these figures as audited results.
